Toddlers (24-36 months) * some children may be placed in a toddler classroom between the ages of 18-24 months

Toddlers love to explore their environment and surroundings. They are in a constant state of motion, using all of their senses to learn about the world around them. Toddlers are also beginning to develop a sense of independence and like to try things on their own. Our toddler program focuses on meeting the individual developmental needs of each child while beginning to introduce new concepts. Activities will focus on developing early social, cognitive, language, self help, fine motor and gross motor skills.

Our Toddler program follows a High Scope Curriculum Philosophy. The components of our day are outlined below:

Our Day at Island Kids:

Greeting Time: Teachers and children talk about the day and any changes to the daily routine. During this time, teachers may tell children about new materials, activities, or any special visitors or events. Classroom discussions on a variety of topics occur during greeting time.

Small Group Time: Teachers work with a small group of children on an activity they have chosen and planned. Activities are designed to introduce concepts and skills as well as expand on previously learned ideas.

Large Group Time: Adults and children in the classroom participate in an activity together. It is a time to build a sense of community in the classroom. Activities may include music and movement, storytelling, games, or other shared physical activities.

Work/Center Time: Children carry out their ideas and explore classroom interest areas such as blocks, the house area, sensory activities, art, toys, or the quiet area. This time allows for social interaction and problem-solving. Teachers closely observe children, supporting their learning and using these observations to assess development and plan future activities.

Outside Time: Each day (weather permitting), children will spend time outdoors exploring their environment as they interact with peers and develop gross motor skills. This is a time for kids to run, climb, and jump as they develop their muscles and coordination. Outdoor play encourages curiosity as children observe nature, explore new surroundings, and create imaginative games.

Choice Time: Children are free to make choices about where they play, what materials they use, and who they play with. As they approach age 3, teachers will introduce more structured planning into the day.

Snack/Lunch Times: Children enjoy a meal together, developing important social skills and self-help abilities. Teachers guide children through meal routines, ensuring they practice manners, engage in positive interactions with peers, and learn to listen to their bodies’ needs.

Nap Time: Children sleep or rest in a quiet, comfortable environment after lunch. This period allows for physical rest and allows children to recharge before the afternoon ahead of them.

Indoor Playroom Time: At a minimum of twice weekly, classes will visit our indoor playroom for an hour of hands-on fun and discovery. The indoor playroom fosters imaginative play as children are given the opportunity to create structures with life-size Magna-Tiles, explore the science of airflow in the wind tunnel, and explore careers and interests in our play storefronts. Playroom time is designed to foster collaboration and curiosity.
